Luca Malbec Uco Valley Mendoza 2014
Highly lauded by the critics, Luca Malbec is a wonderful, balanced example of the powerful reds that Mendoza is capable of. Grown in the prestigious, high altitude region of Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, the grapes for this wine come from 48 year old vines that were hand harvested for the ultimate preservation of quality and fruit selection.
The wine was aged for 14 months in 35% new French and 65% second use French barriques. This Malbec has a deep, inky crimson color with rich notes red berries, cherry cola and sweet spices. Notes of cocoa and espresso are also present on the palate and the wine has a lovely long finish, buoyed by lively acidity.
Laura Catena is a legend in Argentina, and Luca is her personal project that allows her to focus on quality and experimentation over economics. She was the first to do many things in Argentine winemaking in the 1990s, like plant high elevation vineyards, contract with small growers to ensure quality, and plant unique varietals. Today, she continues to be a trailblazer in Mendoza with microbial/phenolic studies, discovering new terroirs, and planting at even higher altitudes.
